No stranger to big fights, Matyushenko is primed to make a statement in his debut appearance with Bellator as he battles former Light Heavyweight Champion Christian M’Pumbu. With a combined record of 44-12 between the two veterans, collecting a victory will be well deserved for either competitor.

“This is exactly what I wanted entering Bellator, a tough test right from the start,” Matyushenko said. “I still have a lot of fights left in my tank, and this is the start of a new chapter in my career.”

Two of Brazil’s best featherweights collide as long time Bellator veteran Patricio Pitbull battles Diego “The Gun” Nunes in the opening round of the featherweight tournament. Nunes joins Bellator after a nearly six year run with the WEC/UFC, and is looking to get his first taste of the Toughest Tournament in Sports. Bellator Only 26, Pitbull continues to hold rank as one of the most dominating featherweights in the world with victories over Daniel Straus, Wilson Reis, and Georgi Karakhanyan and has his sights set on earning another Bellator Title Shot.

“In my last fight, I made Pat Curran back pedal for 25 minutes, and I know he has doubts if he won the fight,” Pitbull said. “When it comes to this tournament, it won’t be Diego or any other guy that will stand in my way for a shot at the belt. I couldn’t think of a better place to start than with Diego. It’s going to be a great fight.”

“The Assassin” returns to the Bellator cage as Russian striker Shahbulat Shamhalaev will face fellow countrymen Akop Stepanyan for a spot in the semifinals of the Bellator Featherweight Tournament. No stranger to the tournament format, Shamhalaev punched his ticket to his title shot in Season 8 with a knockout filled tournament run capped off by a devastating finish against Rad Martinez. Knowing what it takes to climb the mountain that is the Bellator Featherweight Tournament is a fact not lost on Shamhalaev, and his skills will be on the full display from Pechanga Casino & Resort.

The Toughest Tournament in Sports will be rounded out with two intriguing matchups featuring rising Brazilian submission ace Fabricio Guerreiro, who looks to derail the plans of Bellator newcomer Des “The Predator” Green, while “The Juggernaut” Joe Taimanglo has his eyes on moving his winning streak to 10 with a victory over England’s own Andrew Fisher.

“We had an absolutely packed house in March when we brought Bellator MMA live on Spike to Pechanga, and with this card I expect nothing but fireworks” Bellator Chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney stated. “Matyushenko vs. M’Pumbu should be a wickedly exciting main event and will be a great compliment to the explosive start to our $100,000 Featherweight tournament. With names like Pitbull, Shamhalaev, Nunes and Guerreiro, this field is stacked.”

Bellator MMA Main Card:

Bellator Heavyweight Feature Fight: Vladimir ‘The Janitor’ Matyushenko vs. Christian M’Pumbu
Bellator Featherweight Quarterfinal Fight: Patricio Pitbull vs. Diego Nunes
Bellator Featherweight Quarterfinal Fight: Shahbulat Shamhalaev vs. Akop Stepanyan
Bellator Featherweight Quarterfinal Fight: Des Green vs. Fabricio Guerreiro
Bellator Featherweight Quarterfinal Fight: Joe Taimanglo vs. Andrew Fisher

Six-time UFC veteran Houston Alexander will make his Bellator debut on Sept. 13, when he squares off with Vladimir Matyushenko at Bellator 99.

A hand injury forced Christian M’Pumbu, Matyushenko’s original opponent, to withdraw from the light heavyweight bout. The promotion announced the change on Sunday. Bellator 99 takes place at the Pechanga Resort and Casino in Temecula, Calif., and is headlined by a featherweight tournament duel between Patricio Freire and Diego Nunes. The event’s main card will air on Spike TV beginning at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT, while the prelims stream on Spike.com at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT.

Alexander has competed twice under the Victory Fighting Championship banner thus far in 2013, stopping Dennis Reed with punches in March before capturing the promotion’s 205-pound strap with a fourth-round knockout of Chuck Grigsby on July 27. The 41-year-old Nebraskan compiled a 2-4 mark in the Octagon, most notably scoring a 48-second technical knockout of Keith Jardine in his debut at UFC 71. “The Assassin” also owns triumphs over Alessio Sakara, Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou and Razak Al-Hassan.

“It’s an honor to be able to fight for an organization like Bellator,” Alexander said in a release. “I always want to take big fights, and Matyushenko is a guy that’s been around this sport since the beginning, and it will be a huge test. I just want to go out there and smash, do what I do best.”
Matyushenko exited the UFC following a first-round submission loss to Ryan Bader in January. Prior to that, “The Janitor” was knocked out by current light heavyweight title contender Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 141. The 42-year-old Belarusian, who challenged Tito Ortiz for the UFC light heavyweight crown in 2001, owns notable wins over Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, Pedro Rizzo, and Tim Boetsch, to name a few.

Miyazaki-Silvestre matches top 10 ranked BLH fighters and should be good. Kwanthai is pretty solid too, but despite having 4x the fights of Ioka his resume is only 1/4th as strong.

FOX Sports 3 (AUS), 6:00 am EDT, Czar Amonsot vs Steven Wills, Jeff Horn vs Samuel Colomban, Qamil Balla vs Jack Brubaker. You may recall Amonsot from his bloody war with Michael Katsidis back in 2007. Despite the fact that he probably should have hung up his gloves after that (which he did for a bit), he’s still fighting, and he’s winning fights. The really interesting fight here is 2012 Aussie Olympian Horn (3-0-1, 3 KO) taking on veteran Colomban (21-5, 10 KO) in a quick step up. Horn’s draw was a technical draw last time out after a cut.

Fox Sports Network (USA), 10 pm EDT, Shawn Porter vs Julio Diaz II, Badou Jack vs Marco Antonio Periban, Hugo Centeno Jr vs Julian Williams. With the rematch between Porter and Diaz being for the vacant USBA welterweight title you can expect an IBF world title shot for the winner in the not-too-distant-future. Now they just need to avoid drawing (again). Jack-Periban is interesting because the winner is a legit top 10 super middleweight and, with the help of the NABF title, can expect a WBC world title shot soon. Periban is actually coming off a narrow majority decision loss to Sakio Bika for said world title. And finally there’s Centeno Jr vs Williams, matching two young junior middleweight prospects that just might be the future of the division. Given the lack of depth at junior middleweight, the winner can probably already be considered a true contender.

TV Azteca (MEX), 11:30 pm EDT, Jose Pinzon vs Alan Campa, Eduardo Torres vs Armando Cruz.

Saturday, September 14

Channel 5 (UK), 3:00 pm EDT, Kid Galahad vs Jazza Dickens, Hughie Fury vs Shane McPhilbin, Chris Eubank Jr vs TBA. We might have live coverage for this one; there will be a thread at any rate, but live coverage will depend on what kind of time I have in the afternoon.

pandafeed.tv, 7:30 pm EDT, Chris Algieri vs Wilfredo Acuna, Joshua Clottey vs Dashon Johnson.

SHO, 8:00 pm EDT, Countdown Live: Mayweather vs Canelo.

SHO PPV (US) / BoxNation (UK) / Televisa (MEX) / Main Event PPV (AUS), 9:00 pm EDT, Floyd Mayweather vs Canelo Alvarez, Danny Garcia vs Lucas Matthysse, Ishe Smith vs Carlos Molina, Ashley Theophane vs Pablo Cesar Cano. I don’t need to tell you about it! BLH will have live coverage.
